Beginning Your Course

Hardware and Software Requirements
One of the first things you will want to do before beginning your course is to make sure that the computer and software you are using meet the standards that are required. You will also want to make sure that your students have been appropriately advised of any specialized software they may need for the course. The general hardware and software requirements that are included in course announcements for online courses may be found on the Hardware and Software Requirements Page. If your course has additional requirements, it is recommended that you notify students of such requirements prior to registration by publication in the Undergraduate Master Course List, Graduate Studies Bulletin, GothicNet Portal and/or Online Learning website. Please keep in mind that some software applications (e.g. Microsoft Office) are expensive and may be a deterrent to registration..

Browser Settings for WebCT
Although the WebCT learning management system does not require that any special software be installed on your computer, you will need to be sure that your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Netscape) is supported and that it is configured properly for use with WebCT. We recommend that you consult the WebCT Browser Tune-Up page before accessing your course for the first time. Your web browser and operating system will be detected as you go through the Browser Tune-Up. Be sure that you complete both steps: verify that your browser is supported and prepare your browser settings for WebCT.

Logging-Into WebCT

1. Log on to your ISP (Internet Service Provider), open your web browser (e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape) and type the following web address into the Address bar of your browser: http://webct.njcu.edu.
2 You will see the WebCT homepage. Click "Log in to myWebCT."
3. A dialog box will prompt you to enter the WebCT ID and Password. Commencing with the Fall 2005 Semester, all faculty and students will use their GothicNet ID and password to log into online courses. Note: Just as in GothicNet, the password is case sensitive
4. After entering your GothicNet ID and password, click "Log in." You will now be at your personal myWebCT page
5. You may go directly to your course simply by clicking on the course name.

Note: If you have problems logging in, please consult the Trouble Logging In page for more information.

Tips for Beginning Your Course
Follow the instructions in your training packet for customizing your WebCT course template, adding or modifying tools and adding content to your course. You may also wish to consult the Online Course Quality Checklist for tips on how to begin your course. If you need assistance, contact your educational technologist.

Uploading Readable Documents to WebCT: All documents uploaded to WebCT should be in HTML format so that all learners will be able to view them. Documents uploaded in other file formats (e.g., Word, Excel, etc) can only be viewed by those students who have these applications installed on their computers. If you need assistance in converting your documents to HTML format, please consult the Educational Technologist to whom you are assigned
